Foxborough: The Tartan Army came together in a powerful show of unity during Scotland’s FIFA World Cup match against Morocco at Boston Stadium, holding a minute’s applause in the 76th minute to honour Donny Strathie, a lifelong supporter who tragically passed away days before fulfilling his World Cup dream.

Mr Strathie, a 76-year-old from Grangemouth, had travelled to the United States to watch Scotland compete in their first World Cup finals tournament since 1998. He held a match ticket for the highly anticipated fixture against Morocco but died suddenly on Sunday, 14 June, shortly after arriving in Boston.

The emotional tribute was co-ordinated by family friends and quickly galvanised thousands of fans across social media. The 76th minute was specifically chosen to mirror Mr Strathie's age. His close friend, Stewart Easton, who had shared season tickets and travelled across the globe supporting Scotland alongside him for decades, described him as an incredibly dedicated fan. Speaking to CBS Boston, Easton noted that Strathie possessed an encyclopaedic memory for football, able to accurately recall specific goal scorers, match minutes, and team lineups dating back 40 years.

The tragedy resonated deeply within the official Scottish camp. A match preview by Sky Sports noted that Scotland head coach Steve Clarke paid a heartfelt tribute to Mr Strathie ahead of the fixture, highlighting the immense dedication of the travelling support and stating that the fan's sudden passing put football, life, and the World Cup into true perspective.
