England is poised to become one of the first European nations to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, while Scotland has guaranteed a play-off spot, following a dramatic few days of European qualifying matches.

England's near miss

Thomas Tuchel's England squad has completely dominated Group K, currently boasting five wins from five games and an unblemished defensive record of no goals conceded. After Serbia's recent defeat to Albania, the Three Lions now need just one more victory to seal their spot in the tournament.

England heads to Latvia on Tuesday, October 14, where a win would guarantee automatic qualification. A draw would not be enough to confirm their spot this week.

Scotland secures play-off spot

Scotland continues its strong form in Group C, having collected 10 points from their first four matches, most recently defeating Belarus. Their position was further solidified after Denmark beat Greece, guaranteeing Scotland at least a play-off place.

Now sitting second in Group C on goal difference, Scotland knows that two wins from their final two qualifiers next month -- against Greece and Denmark -- will secure an automatic ticket to the World Cup.

The final match against Denmark at Hampden on November 18 is shaping up to be a highly anticipated, winner-takes-all clash for top spot in the group.

Northern Ireland and Wales battles

The race in other groups remains intensely competitive:

Northern Ireland secured a critical 2-0 win over Slovakia on Friday, setting the stage for a mouth-watering clash with Germany at Windsor Park on Monday night. All three nations are currently level on six points after three matches in Group A, meaning the fight for qualification is wide open.

Wales is currently chasing the leaders in Group J, where North Macedonia holds a one-point lead over Belgium and a two-point cushion over the Welsh side. Crucially, both Belgium and Wales have a game in hand. Wales faces a major test against Belgium on Monday before meeting North Macedonia in their final qualifier in November.

Republic of Ireland facing uphill climb

The Republic of Ireland faces a difficult path after suffering a 1-0 loss to Portugal in Lisbon. Now sitting bottom of Group F, the Irish side is three points behind second-placed Hungary. They must defeat Armenia on Tuesday to retain any realistic chance of securing a play-off berth.
