Buenos Aires (Argentina): The football world united to honour Argentine superstar Lionel Messi following his decision to step down from international duty, triggering a wave of emotional tributes from teammates, world leaders, and global sports figures.

Current and former international teammates led the tributes, expressing deep gratitude for the iconic captain's legacy. Fellow 2022 World Cup winner Angel Di Maria reflected on their shared journey on social media, writing, “It's so hard to read that we won't see you in the sky blue and white anymore. I only know that I was born in the right century to be able to see you, enjoy you, and on top of that, to share all these years with you on the national team.”

Rodrigo De Paul, who played alongside Messi both for Argentina and at Inter Miami, shared a moving message for the forward, “Just thank you, the greatest of all time, thank you for making us so, so happy, you can't imagine how many smiles you brought!! You are eternal.”

Defender Cristian Romero also expressed his gratitude, noting, “I love you, I admire you, and I will always be grateful for everything you gave for me and for our country. Eternal thanks, captain.”

The official Argentine national team account added a simple tribute, “Eternal thanks, Leo. We will love you until the end of our days.”

Tributes extended far beyond the dressing room. Argentine President Javier Milei offered concise praise, posting, “Thank you so much, incredible man.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino commended Messi's legendary international run, stating, “Congratulations @leomessi on an extraordinary international career which has inspired millions and redefined the beautiful game.”

Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, shared a personal note celebrating his achievements: “What a privilege to have been by your side on this journey and to see you fulfill all your dreams. You deserved this story and so much more. We love you infinitely.”
