The former centre-back made 61 appearances for Brazil and is being remembered as one of the country's greatest defenders

Morristown: Former Brazil defender Brito, a member of the country's legendary 1970 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, has died at the age of 86.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed on Thursday that the former centre-back had passed away. No official cause of death was provided by the federation.
Known for his physical strength and commanding presence in defence, Brito represented Brazil between 1964 and 1972 and made dozens of appearances for the national side during one of the most successful periods in the country's football history.
Integral part of Brazil's golden era
Brito was a key figure in the team that lifted the World Cup in Mexico in 1970, a squad widely regarded as one of the greatest international teams ever assembled. Playing alongside defender Wilson Piazza, he helped form a solid defensive unit behind an attack led by football icons such as Pelé, Jairzinho and Rivellino.
Recent reports in Brazil noted that Brito featured in all six matches of Brazil's victorious 1970 World Cup campaign and was a regular starter throughout the tournament. He had also represented the national team at the 1966 World Cup.
The defender made 61 appearances for Brazil between 1964 and 1972, according to the Brazilian Football Confederation. During that period, he established himself as one of the country's most dependable defenders.
Tribute from CBF president
Paying tribute to the former international, CBF president Samir Xaud described Brito as one of Brazil's finest defenders.
“Brito left us as one of the greatest defenders in the history of Brazilian football,” Xaud said in a statement.
“His contribution to the 1970 World Cup victory will be eternally remembered by all of us.”
Xaud also offered condolences while highlighting the player's lasting influence on future generations.
“I pay my respects to this idol of our country,” he said. “May his fighting spirit be an inspiration to our players who will compete in the World Cup.”
Success beyond the World Cup
In addition to his World Cup triumph, Brito was part of Brazil teams that won the Copa Roca in 1971 and the Taça Independência in 1972.
At club level, he enjoyed a lengthy career and became particularly associated with Vasco da Gama, where he spent the most successful years of his playing days. He also represented several other Brazilian clubs before ending his professional career in 1979.
Family announces death
Brazilian media reported that Brito's family announced his death through his official social media channels. They thanked supporters for their prayers and messages of support, adding that details regarding funeral arrangements would be released later. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Brazil prepare for next World Cup challenge
Brazil remain the most successful nation in World Cup history, having won the tournament five times. The national team will begin its latest campaign on Saturday with a match against Morocco.
