India’s legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has opened up about the pivotal role he played in Sanju Samson’s recent cricketing resurgence. Speaking on the Sports Tak podcast, Yuvraj detailed how a candid conversation regarding technical discipline helped the wicketkeeper-batter transform from a fringe player into the Player of the Tournament at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The turning point arrived during a period of significant struggle for Samson, who had faced a string of underwhelming scores. Yuvraj noted that the Rajasthan Royals captain had reached a crossroads where his place in the national side felt increasingly precarious.

"Coming to Sanju Samson, who failed in 8-10 innings, was going through failure. That’s where you need to say, I need to change something," Yuvraj remarked.

Identifying a specific technical vulnerability, Yuvraj urged Samson to address his movement at the crease. He argued that while runs are never guaranteed, the foundation of a batter’s game—their footwork—must be impeccable to survive at the highest level.

"So my issue with Sanju was, you have to improve your footwork. If you don’t improve your footwork, you will consistently land in trouble," Yuvraj explained.

The advice bore spectacular fruit during the 2026 T20 World Cup. Samson finished as India’s leading run-scorer, culminating in a historic 89-run blitz in the final against the West Indies. His performance not only secured the trophy but also saw him shatter records, surpassing the previous highest individual score in a T20 World Cup final and setting a new benchmark with 24 tournament sixes.
