Kalpetta (Wayanad): Three sisters from Sultan Bathery in Wayanad, Kerala, are poised to make history by playing together in the UAE national cricket team during the Asia Cup Women's T20 Cricket Tournament.
Rithika Rajith, Rinitha Rajith, and Rishitha Rajith, who grew up together in the same household, will adorn the colours of the UAE in the prestigious tournament. The trio had been part of the UAE team for the past three years, but they had never played together before.
Originally hailing from Sultan Bathery, the trio shifted their focus from badminton to cricket after excelling in sports in the UAE. They were also a part of the UAE national basketball team.
Following COVID-19, they shifted their focus from badminton to cricket. Following this, they were selected for the first time in the 15-member squad representing the UAE in the Asia Cup.
Their journey from badminton to cricket began with training under their father, Rajith, a former player for the Wayanad district team in the 1980s. Rinitha and Rishitha had both represented the U-11 Kozhikode basketball team in 2016.
Rithika, currently an HR officer in a private company, is also a certified umpire by the Badminton World Federation and an A-level coach certified by the International Cricket Council.
Rinitha, who recently completed her secondary education, is preparing to study computer engineering. Rishitha is a Plus 1 student.
Their inclusion in the national cricket team marks a milestone for the siblings, who will face Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Nepal in the upcoming Asia Cup matches scheduled on the 19th, 21st, and 23rd of the month.
