Before being dismissed, the young batter struck three crisp fours during his 12-ball stay, looking to take control against the new ball right from the outset.

India's latest batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had a disappointing India A debut on Tuesday against Sri Lanka A in the opening match of the tri-series. On a day of high expectations after his record-breaking IPL season, the 15-year-old opener flashed early promise before falling for 14, undone by a stunning catch.
In Dambulla, India A captain Tilak Varma won the toss and chose to bat, sending Sooryavanshi out to open in his first appearance in an India jersey. The right-hander, who headlined the A-squad announcement last month, began positively, signalling the same aggressive mindset that lit up the IPL. He struck three crisp fours in a 12-ball stay, looking to seize control of the new ball from the outset.
The momentum shifted when Sri Lanka A pacer Mohamed Shiraz pitched one up outside off. Sooryavanshi tried to muscle the full-length delivery over mid-off, aiming to clear the infield, but the bat turned in his hands as he swung through the shot. The ball ballooned towards mid-off, where Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige flung himself low to his left to pull off a superb diving catch, inches above the turf.
The dismissal sparked loud celebrations in the Sri Lankan camp; they knew they had removed the most explosive name in India A’s top order before he could do serious damage.
Team sources later admitted the plan had been to give Sooryavanshi full licence in the powerplay, banking on his ability to turn even good bowling into scoring opportunities -- a strategy that brought rich rewards in the IPL but also carries risks in the more unforgiving rhythm of international cricket.
IPL phenomenon in India jersey
Sooryavanshi's debut has been one of the most anticipated storylines of this tri-series. The young opener tore up IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs from 16 matches at an extraordinary strike rate of around 237 -- numbers rarely seen even in franchise cricket. His tally earned him the Orange Cap as well as a clutch of end-of-season awards, including Most Valuable Player and Emerging Player, after repeatedly giving Royals blistering starts at the top of the order.
It was this sustained onslaught against seasoned T20 attacks that propelled him into the India A set-up. The BCCI's selection committee fast-tracked him into the squad for the tri-nation series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A, seeing the tour as a bridge between IPL dominance and a potential senior India call-up later in the season.
Tuesday's dismissal, then, is less a setback than a reminder that even the most explosive domestic performers must adjust to more disciplined bowling and better fielding at the international level.
How the sides lined up
India A fielded a youthful but talent-heavy XI under Tilak Varma, reflecting the board’s strategy of using this series as a grooming ground for the next wave of white-ball players. Alongside Sooryavanshi at the top were wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh and promising batters Priyansh Arya and Ruturaj Gaikwad, with Varma anchoring the middle order.
The squad also includes all-rounders Nishant Sindhu, Anukul Roy and Ayush Badoni, and a bowling attack featuring Yash Thakur, Yudhvir Singh Charak, Arshad Khan and Vipraj Nigam, plus reserves Kumar Kushagra, Suryansh Shedge and Anshul Kamboj.
Sri Lanka A, captained by Sahan Arachchige, fielded a line-up rich in domestic and international experience. Their squad features top-order batters Avishka Fernando and Nuwanidu Fernando, wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, middle-order options Sadeera Samarawickrama and Vanuja Sahan, and all-rounders like Chamika Karunaratne.
The pace and spin departments are bolstered by Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Mohamed Shiraz, Ahan Wickramasinghe, Chamika Gunasekera, Ravindu Fernando, Garuka Sanketa, Vishen Halambage, Kugathas Mathulan and Dulaj Samuditha, reflecting Sri Lanka’s intent to use the A tour as a testing lab for their next generation.
