Kolkata, West Bengal: A fresh controversy erupted over remarks made about Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma as All India Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy expressed his support for Congress leader Shama Mohamed’s recent criticism. Mohamed had allegedly fat-shamed the cricket star, calling him “overweight” and "the most unimpressive captain India has ever had."
Speaking on IANS, Saugata Roy echoed similar sentiments, claiming that Sharma’s performance has been disappointing in recent times. “I heard that Rohit Sharma's performance has been quite poor. He scored one century, but other than that, he gets out after scoring 2, 3, 4, or 5 runs,” Roy said. “He shouldn’t be in the team. India wins because the other players play well, but the captain doesn’t contribute much," Roy added.
This remark has reignited a debate about Rohit Sharma’s role and leadership within the Indian cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier condemned Shama Mohamed's comment, calling it "demoralising" for the team and warning that such remarks could harm player morale, especially during an ongoing tournament.
The remarks have drawn backlash from fans and cricket enthusiasts, many of whom have defended Sharma for his leadership and contribution to the Indian team.
