Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill has been officially ruled out of the must-win second Test against South Africa, scheduled to begin in Guwahati on Friday.

The development comes as a significant setback for India, who are trailing in the two-match series after a 30-run loss in the opening Test at Eden Gardens, where Gill’s absence during the second innings was sorely felt.

Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, forcing him to skip India’s second innings chase of 124.

Although he was initially admitted to a local hospital for observation and later discharged, the medical team has advised him against participating in the physically demanding five-day format until he completes a full rehabilitation cycle.

Despite travelling with the team to Guwahati in hopes of proving his fitness, Gill was deemed not match-ready, prompting team management to take a cautious call.

In his place, 24-year-old left-handed top-order batter Sai Sudharsan has been drafted into the playing XI. Sudharsan made his Test debut in England in June and has appeared in five Tests so far, scoring 273 runs at an average of 30.33.

His last Test came at home against the West Indies in October, where he impressed with scores of 39 and 87. Although part of the squad for the current South Africa series, he was not selected for the first Test.

This will now be a crucial opportunity for the young batter to stabilise India’s top order in Gill’s absence.

According to PTI, Gill will require a minimum of 10 days to regain full mobility and then undergo structured rehabilitation before returning to competitive cricket. This timeline means he is likely to be rested for the ODI series beginning on November 30 in Ranchi.

With the series carrying little long-term significance, selectors may opt to ease him back gradually.

However, there is an underlying strategic concern. With his ODI deputy Shreyas Iyer still recovering from an on-field injury, Gill reportedly does not want prolonged absences to trigger discussions around alternative captaincy options, including KL Rahul or Axar Patel—even in a temporary capacity.

For now, though, preserving his long-term fitness has taken priority. India will hope Sudharsan’s inclusion stabilises the batting order as they push to level the series in Guwahati.
