Experts suggest standard IPL insurance doesn't cover politically motivated terminations, leaving KKR with no obligation to pay.

Kolkata: Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman is unlikely to receive any financial payout following his abrupt release from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a move dictated by the BCCI that has ignited a diplomatic row between the two neighbouring cricket boards.
Mustafizur, who was secured by KKR for ₹9.20 crore after an intense bidding war with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, saw his contract terminated despite no professional or disciplinary breach on his part. The Indian board cited "developments all around" as the reason for the directive, an apparent reference to the deteriorating political ties between New Delhi and Dhaka.

The release has prompted the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to demand that its T20 World Cup matches be relocated from India to Sri Lanka, citing safety concerns for its players.
While the move has sparked a debate over labour rights in franchise cricket, industry experts say the standard IPL insurance framework provides no protection for a player terminated under political or administrative circumstances.
"The salaries of all IPL players are insured. For foreign international players, normally the franchise pays if he is injured after joining the camp or during the course of the tournament," an IPL source told PTI on condition of anonymity. "Normally, up to 50 per cent is paid from insurance. It is better for India's injured centrally contracted cricketers who normally get paid by the BCCI."
However, because Mustafizur was not released due to an injury or a cricketing reason, KKR is under no legal obligation to honour the contract. "In case of an insurance claim, this current situation isn't covered, so KKR are under no official obligation to pay a penny," the source added.
Legal recourse remains a remote possibility, as the IPL falls under Indian jurisdiction, and a protracted court battle could further strain the player's future prospects in the league. The BCB has already revoked Mustafizur’s No Objection Certificate (NOC), further complicating any potential claim.
