MS Dhoni addresses retirement rumors ahead of IPL 2026. Discover CSK's future plans, the Sanju Samson trade, and the Hall of Fame induction. Read the latest now!

Chennai: Is this the final lap for the legendary MS Dhoni? The "Thala" of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has finally broken his silence on the persistent retirement rumours that have gripped the cricketing world ahead of IPL 2026.
During the high-octane "ROAR 2026" pre-season event at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, March 22, the 44-year-old veteran gave a candid and heart-tugging update on his future. When popular actor Sivakarthikeyan quipped that Dhoni’s fitness could easily see him playing until he is 60, the five-time IPL-winning captain offered a reality check.
"It is very difficult," Dhoni replied. "My fitness is on the way down, not the way up."
However, seeing the crestfallen faces of the "Yellow Army" at Chepauk, Dhoni quickly added, "I can try," sparking a deafening roar that echoed across Chennai.
The speculation surrounding MS Dhoni’s retirement has reached a fever pitch this season, largely due to CSK's unprecedented moves in the IPL 2026 Auction and trade window. For the first time in history, the franchise appears to have built a definitive succession plan.
In a blockbuster move, CSK acquired T20 World Cup 2026 hero Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals. Samson, fresh off a "Player of the Tournament" performance, is widely seen as the heir apparent to Dhoni’s wicketkeeping gloves.
At the Abu Dhabi auction, CSK shattered records by signing uncapped stars Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma for a staggering ₹14.2 crore each.
With Samson, Kartik Sharma, and Urvil Patil in the squad, CSK now has three specialist keeper-batters, a clear sign that the management is preparing for a future without their talismanic No. 7.
Hall of Fame: Honoring "Chinna Thala" and Hayden
The event wasn't just about the future; it was a nostalgic nod to the legends who built the CSK legacy. The franchise officially launched the CSK Hall of Fame, inducting its first two members:
- Suresh Raina: The "Mr. IPL" and beloved Chinna Thala, who remains the highest run-getter for the franchise.
- Matthew Hayden: The Australian powerhouse who defined CSK’s aggressive intent in the early years.
IPL 2026: CSK vs RR Opener
Chennai Super Kings will begin their quest for a record-breaking sixth title under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad on March 30. They face Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, a match that will also see Sanju Samson debut in the yellow jersey against his former side.
As the oldest active player in the league, every match MS Dhoni plays in 2026 might be his last. But if his "I can try" comment is anything to go by, the finisher isn't finished just yet.
