Chennai Super Kings appear to be preparing for the end of MS Dhoni's playing career, with the franchise making a series of moves that signal the 44-year-old wicketkeeper's final season may be approaching. Former CSK player Robin Uthappa stated this week that IPL 2026 will be Dhoni's last, while head coach Stephen Fleming openly acknowledged the team is planning for a future without their legendary captain.

"I think the writing is on the wall. This is clearly going to be MS Dhoni's last season," Uthappa told JioHotstar on Tuesday during the IPL 2026 auction coverage. "No more conjecture, no more speculation about whether he is going to play another year or not. This year, he will be well and truly done."

Fleming's comments at the auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16 were equally revealing. "We felt we were still a little bit light in our opening batting. And we were also looking at the fact that at some point, MS will move on," he said. The coach described the team's recent moves as "succession planning" while also considering "what Chennai will look like in six years, not just two".

Youth Movement Signals Transition

CSK's strategy shift became apparent through two major transactions. In November, the franchise traded long-time all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and England's Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. Fleming confirmed Samson was acquired to fill the wicketkeeping void that Dhoni will eventually leave.

At the auction, CSK made headlines by spending Rs 14.2 crore each on uncapped youngsters Kartik Sharma, a 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, and Prashant Veer, a 20-year-old all-rounder. The combined Rs 28.4 crore investment represented 60 per cent of CSK's total auction purse and set records for uncapped Indian players.

"As the game has evolved, we might have been a little bit slow to evolve with it," Fleming acknowledged. The franchise had finished last in IPL 2025 for the first time in their history, winning just four of 14 matches.

Dhoni, who has battled knee problems in recent seasons, has not committed to playing beyond 2026. The former India captain has led CSK to five IPL titles and remains the oldest active player in the league. Uthappa suggested Dhoni may operate as a "player-mentor" during the upcoming season, transitioning toward a full mentorship role afterwards.
