A fresh controversy has emerged in IPL 2026 after Lalit Modi reacted to viral claims of ‘black magic’ during a CSK vs SRH match

A controversy erupted during IPL 2026 after a viral video and an unverified letter triggered claims of ‘black magic’ during the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) match.
The issue began when footage from the game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium showed a fan performing what appeared to be a ‘lemon ritual’ moments before CSK batter Shivam Dube faced SRH pacer Sakib Hussain. The clip quickly spread online, fuelling speculation among viewers.

‘Seems fake this time’
Reacting to the viral claims, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi dismissed the circulating letter as fake but added that such incidents had allegedly taken place in the past. “Seems fake this time. But one team owner did indulge in this type of practice,” he said.
He further claimed that a similar episode occurred during the 2011 season and that he had received “concrete proof” at the time. “I even alerted the opposing team owners about this way back in 2011 season,” he stated, adding that more details could be revealed in a future project.
Following the video, an alleged complaint letter attributed to CSK began circulating on social media. However, there has been no official confirmation from the IPL authorities or either franchise regarding the authenticity of the letter or the claims.
Match outcome and what’s next
Amid the off-field controversy, the match itself saw a competitive contest. Chasing 195, CSK made a strong start, reaching 76 runs in the powerplay. However, SRH pulled things back with disciplined bowling, shifting the momentum.
Despite a close finish, SRH held their nerve to secure a 10-run victory. The team will next face Delhi Capitals, while CSK are set to take on Mumbai Indians in a high-profile clash.
Overall, while the claims have generated significant attention online, they remain unverified, and the focus now returns to the ongoing IPL season.
