While wife Sanjana Ganesan relayed requests from Gavaskar and Pujara for Bumrah's full participation, Bumrah deferred a decision

Leeds: Jasprit Bumrah’s sensational performance in the first Test against England at Headingley has reignited the debate over his planned limited involvement in the ongoing five-match series.
While it has already been announced that the pace spearhead will feature in only three Tests due to workload management, several former cricketers and fans are now urging him to play the entire series, especially after his match-defining five-wicket haul in the first innings.
Bumrah’s spell of 5 for 83 stood out in England’s total of 465, where no other Indian pacer looked particularly threatening. His scalps included key wickets; Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue. His figures might have been even more impressive had the slip cordon capitalised on the opportunities he created.
A humble plea from the legends
On Day 4, ahead of the start of play, Bumrah made a brief appearance on Sony Sports Network in a light-hearted chat with presenter and his wife, Sanjana Ganesan. During the conversation, she relayed a heartfelt plea from Indian cricket icons Cheteshwar Pujara and Sunil Gavaskar.
“There is a request that has come from upstairs — from Cheteshwar Pujara and Sunil Gavaskar,” she said.
“Don't shoot the messenger. I’m just telling you, quote-unquote, ‘Jasprit, please play all five Tests, please, please.’”
Bumrah, ever calm and composed, did not offer a firm answer, instead leaving the door slightly ajar. “That is a conversation we will have on another day,” he replied, smiling.
A reminder from the past
The decision to rest Bumrah for two Tests wasn’t made lightly. The Indian pacer had played all five matches during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, a series that saw him develop a back spasm in the final Test at Sydney. That injury forced him out of action for three months and also ruled him out of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, which India went on to win.
Both the BCCI selectors and Bumrah had confirmed before the England series that he wouldn’t feature in all five games. The aim remains clear: manage his workload and keep him in prime condition for key future assignments.
Bumrah the Game-Changer
Despite the limitations placed on his appearances, Bumrah has already shown his immense value in the series opener. With England posting a competitive first-innings score, it was Bumrah’s incisive bowling that kept India in the contest and eventually earned them a narrow six-run lead.
The rest of the pace unit, including Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, struggled to contain the run flow, which only highlighted Bumrah’s effectiveness even more.
On the batting front, India posted an impressive 471 in the first innings, thanks to brilliant centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. The lead has now extended beyond 150, setting up a thrilling conclusion to the Test with all three results still possible.
