Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Virat Kohli expressed satisfaction with his performance on Wednesday night, noting a significant improvement in his rhythm during a five-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) despite continuing to manage a knee injury and a recent bout of illness.

Kohli’s aggressive opening helped propel the defending champions to the summit of the Indian Premier League points table. Chasing a modest target of 147, RCB reached 149/5 in 15.1 overs, anchored by Kohli’s 49 and supported by brisk contributions from captain Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma.

Navigating Physical Hurdles

The veteran batter admitted that while his intensity at the crease felt rejuvenated, he has yet to reach peak physical condition following a period of poor health and physical discomfort.

"Much better than the last game. I'm still not 100%. My knee was a bit sore in the last game. Even health-wise, I've been under the weather for four or five days now. So, just getting back up to my best," Kohli said in the post-match presentation. "I started well today, so I was happy with my intensity. Again, would have liked to carry on and finish the game off."

Strategic Adjustments at the Chinnaswamy

The typically high-scoring surface at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium presented unusual challenges due to extreme local heat and a lack of grass cover. Kohli observed that the pitch lacked its usual tackiness, becoming progressively slower and drier as the evening unfolded.

"It was slower than normal. There was not enough grass on it. The last 3-4 days have been very, very hot. It's been very dry as well," Kohli explained. "So, we thought it was going to be a dry, slow wicket rather than one of those bare ones that are tacky when we play in Chinnaswamy."

Given these conditions, RCB’s tactical approach centred on an aggressive power play to seize control before the pitch deteriorated. Kohli noted that taking the game away from the opposition in the first six overs was a primary objective.

"For those reasons, the powerplay batting was important, and hence I say that I was happy with my approach today. I was able to put the team in front early on," he remarked, though he expressed a minor regret about not remaining at the crease for the winning runs. "In the end, should have probably finished that one off as well."

Match Overview

Earlier in the evening, RCB’s bowling unit, spearheaded by a clinical performance from Rasikh Salam Dar, dismantled the LSG batting lineup, dismissing the visitors for 146. The subsequent chase was never in doubt, as Patidar’s 27 and Sharma’s 23 complemented Kohli’s steady hand to ensure a dominant finish for the home side.
