The Bangladesh government has confirmed that there are no restrictions on broadcasting the upcoming Indian Premier League season in the country. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan stated that authorities have not received any request to block the telecast and will not interfere with broadcasters.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque also indicated that discussions would be held with relevant stakeholders if any broadcaster applies for telecast rights.
Government’s stance
Swapan emphasised that the government does not intend to mix politics with sport and will consider any telecast request from a commercial standpoint. He added that broadcasters, including Star Sports, are free to air the tournament if they choose to do so.
Officials further clarified that directives issued by the previous interim government regarding a potential ban are no longer valid.
Background of the confusion
The uncertainty around IPL telecast in Bangladesh stemmed from earlier reports suggesting restrictions linked to tensions involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) over Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman.
However, current authorities have distanced themselves from those decisions, signalling a reset in approach.
The clarification ensures that cricket fans in Bangladesh are likely to have access to IPL 2026 broadcasts, maintaining the tournament’s strong regional viewership. It also reflects an effort by the government to separate sports broadcasting from political developments.
