Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has dramatically cut the IPL 2026 mini-auction player pool by nearly 75%, whittling down the registered list from 1,355 to just 350 players ahead of the December 16 event in Abu Dhabi. The pruning, confirmed to franchises in a communication sent late Monday night, comes after several rounds of consultations with teams as they prepare to fill 77 vacant roster spots.

De Kock's Timely Return

Among 35 surprise additions to the final list, the most eye-catching is South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, who was not included in the original longlist but was added to the third lot of keeper-batters following a franchise request, according to Cricbuzz. The 32-year-old's inclusion comes on the heels of a spectacular 106-run knock off 89 balls against India in Visakhapatnam on December 5, his seventh ODI century against the hosts. De Kock, who recently reversed his international retirement, has slashed his base price to INR 1 crore, half of what Kolkata Knight Riders paid for him last season before releasing him after an underwhelming campaign.

The roster update also includes 12 other overseas players, among them Sri Lankan fast bowlers Binura Fernando and Traveen Mathew, wicketkeeper Kusal Perera, spinner Dunith Wellalage, and West Indies all-rounder Akeem Auguste. Twenty-three Indian players were also added to the final pool, including Vishnu Solanki, Sadek Hussain, and Parikshit Valsangkar.

The auction will commence at 1 PM UAE time (2:30 PM IST) at the Etihad Arena, beginning with capped players grouped by specialist roles—batters, all-rounders, wicketkeeper-batters, fast bowlers, and spinners—followed by uncapped players in the same sequence. An accelerated phase is tentatively set to begin after the 70th player, Afghanistan's Wahidullah Zadran, with players numbered 71 to 350 going under the hammer in rapid-fire succession.

Kolkata Knight Riders enter with the largest purse of INR 64.30 crore and 13 slots to fill, followed by Chennai Super Kings with INR 43.40 crore and nine vacancies. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who strategically registered as a batter rather than an all-rounder to ensure early placement when franchise purses are at their fullest, is expected to trigger the auction's fiercest bidding war.
