In a night defined by redemption and record-breaking brilliance, Sanju Samson steered India into the T20 World Cup semi-finals with a masterful 97 not out, single-handedly dismantling West Indies in a high-stakes "virtual quarter-final" at Eden Gardens.

Chasing a formidable 196, Samson’s unbeaten 50-ball knock—laced with 12 boundaries and four towering sixes—propelled India to their highest-ever successful chase in T20 World Cup history. Despite wickets falling around him, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter exhibited ice-cold composure, carrying his bat to seal a five-wicket victory with four balls to spare.

From Bench to Best in Class

The performance was a poetic response to a turbulent tournament for Samson. Having been benched for India’s World Cup campaign in the US and Caribbean in 2024, and ignored during the current group stage—including the high-stakes encounter against Pakistan—Samson was only recalled after India’s top order crumbled in a bruising 76-run defeat to South Africa in Ahmedabad.

Following the match, a visibly impressed captain Suryakumar Yadav paid tribute to his teammate’s resilience, even bowing to the batter on the field.

“I always say, good things happen to good people who wait, who have a lot of patience. I said it just now as well when I met him. But then it’s all his hard work, what he’s been doing behind the doors when he was not playing, and he’s got the fruit of it at the perfect stage. And the way he batted, took the side completely to the victory,” Surya said.

The U-Turn: A Press Conference to Remember

However, social media was quick to remind the Indian skipper of his previous stance. Just over a week ago, ahead of the clash against South Africa, Surya had laughed off suggestions to include Samson in the starting XI.

When a reporter asked if Samson’s aggressive style was needed to fix India’s sluggish powerplay starts, Surya replied with a smile: “Are you telling me I should include him in place of Abhishek?” He followed up with a hearty laugh when the prospect of Samson batting at No. 3 was raised: “Oh so I should play him instead of Tilak (Varma)?”
