Colombo: The high-stakes ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 showdown between India and Pakistan is now facing a looming threat of disruption as of Friday, as meteorologists warned of a developing weather system poised to drench the Sri Lankan capital this Sunday.

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology issued a special bulletin at 10:30 am local time, cautioning that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal around February 15, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to the island.

The Forecast: Colombo Under Pressure

The blockbuster clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium is scheduled for Sunday evening, but current atmospheric models suggest "inclement weather" will coincide with the match.

  • Precipitation Risk: Sunday’s forecast for Colombo predicts scattered thunderstorms with a 65% chance of rain during the day and a 25% chance at night.
  • Temperature & Wind: Highs of 28°C are expected, with north winds at 9 mph and humidity at 77%.
  • Timing the Storm: Forecasters warned of a potential thunderstorm just before the match's scheduled start, which could force a delayed toss or an interrupted contest.

The "Washout" Concern

While tournament organisers remain hopeful, a washout would see both arch-rivals share points. Such an outcome would complicate the qualification race in Group A, where both teams currently remain unbeaten.

Groundstaff in Colombo, renowned for their ability to cover the entire outfield in minutes, have been put on high alert. However, meteorologists noted that the proximity of the low-pressure system, which may intensify into a depression by early next week, makes the local weather "highly unpredictable."

The Department of Meteorology has advised the public, as well as the thousands of fans flying in for the match, to remain "highly attentive" to future updates as the system develops.
