The most hyped rivalry in world cricket isn’t quite setting the box office on fire this time. Despite the historic frenzy that usually surrounds an India-Pakistan clash, tickets for their Asia Cup 2025 group-stage encounter in Dubai on September 14 remain surprisingly unsold — even ten days after going live.

For context: the last time the two giants met at the same venue in the Champions Trophy 2023, tickets vanished in under four minutes. This time? As of Thursday, 9 pm IST, nearly 50% of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium seats were still available.

Prices may be part of the problem. The cheapest tickets started at USD 99, while premium seats soared to USD 4,534 (about ₹4 lakh). Notably, the lower-priced stands sold out quickly, leaving the premium sections to gather dust. Platinumlist, the official partner, also offered a special seven-match package (including this blockbuster) for around AED 14,000.

An Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) official admitted being “surprised” by the slow response, while another insisted sales were “encouraging.” Still, the sight of empty seats weeks before the marquee showdown is a first in recent memory.

Is Boycott Fever Behind the Slump?

The lacklustre sales may be tied to public sentiment in India, which remains raw after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Calls for boycotting cricketing ties with Pakistan have grown louder, with some former cricketers and pundits pushing for a harder stance.

Former India captain Kapil Dev, however, urged players to focus on the game:

"Just go and win. The government will do its job — players should do theirs. Don’t make this a big issue."

The BCCI has reiterated its position of following government policy: no bilateral cricket with Pakistan, only meetings in multinational tournaments.

On the Field, Fire Still Burns

India skipper Suryakumar Yadav said his team is “excited” about Sunday’s clash, while Pakistan captain Salman Agha promised his side would bring their “natural flair” to the contest.

India has already started their campaign with a win over the UAE, while Pakistan faces Oman next before the blockbuster. If results fall into place, fans could see the two sides square off three times in the tournament.
