Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a stunning 101 on Day 1 of the first Test against England, marking his fifth Test century

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered a magnificent performance on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley on Friday, smashing an exceptional 101 runs off just 159 balls, an innings punctuated by 16 boundaries and one towering maximum. This stellar knock marked his maiden Test century on English soil and the fifth of his burgeoning Test career.
With this century, the left-handed batsman joins an exclusive list of Indian cricketers who have scored a Test ton in their very first Test innings in England. He now stands alongside legends such as Saurav Ganguly (131 at Lord's, 1996), Vijay Manjrekar (133 at Leeds, 1952), Sandeep Patil (129* at Manchester, 1982), and Murali Vijay (146 at Nottingham, 2014).
This match also inaugurates the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both India and England.
Jaiswal's impressive start to the series further solidifies his remarkable Test record against England. Among players who have participated in at least five Tests and scored a minimum of 500 runs against England, Jaiswal now boasts the highest average.
In just six Tests against the Poms, he has accumulated 813 runs across 10 innings at an astounding average of 90.33, featuring three centuries and three half-centuries.
Furthermore, Jaiswal has become only the seventh Indian batter to score a century at Headingley. A notable characteristic of his five Test centuries is that none of them have come against Asian nations, underscoring his strong performances in challenging overseas conditions.
Remarkably, Jaiswal has now slammed a century on his maiden Test outings in Australia, the West Indies, and England. Of his five Test tons, three have been scored against England, with one each against Australia and the West Indies.
Jaiswal's brilliant innings came to an end shortly after Tea on Day 1, when he was dismissed by England skipper Ben Stokes for 101.
