Celebrity chef Suresh Pillai on Satuday shared insights into the disciplined life of Malayali cricketer Sanju Samson, who was recently named Player of the Tournament in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Pillai described a recent night in Mumbai when Samson requested a traditional Kerala meal after a brilliant performance against the West Indies.

According to Pillai’s social media post, Samson’s manager called to say that after three months of strict diet meals, Samson wanted a cheat meal. He asked if Pillai could arrange pazhamkanji ( a traditional Kerala breakfast made by fermenting leftover rice overnight, preferably red matta rice), kappa (tapioca) and chammanthi (Kerala-style chutney).

Pillai recalled that while pazhamkanji was difficult to prepare at short notice, kanji (rice porridge), kappa, fish, and accompaniments were quickly organised through his friend, Rassak Ikka, owner of Society Hotel, Mumbai, and delivered straight to St. Regis Mumbai, where he stayed. Pillai said Sanju’s effort reflected the unseen sacrifices behind every successful tournament: months of training, social media off, phone switched off, and relentless preparation.

Kochi dinner and moments of joy

Pillai recounted another visit when Samson arrived in Kochi before flying to Delhi. The cricketer, accompanied by friends, always made time for a private dinner at RCP, where Pillai would prepare food for them on the balcony. The evening was filled with laughter, food, and World Cup stories that rarely reach television.

Pillai emphasised how these simple gatherings captured both Samson’s humility and his roots. Each time he cooked for him, it felt like the first, highlighting the personal connection between the chef and the player.

From Thiruvananthapuram streets to the world stage

Reflecting on Samson’s journey, Pillai said the cricketer had grown from a boy dreaming on the streets of Thiruvananthapuram to a global cricket star. As the IPL approaches, Samson is set to walk onto the Chepauk pitch, not only as a player but as a symbol of Malayali pride. Pillai described how watching him bat inspires every Malayali, reminding fans that he is “one of us.”
