Ahmedabad: Tilak Varma dismantled the Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack with a relentless, unbeaten 101 on Monday, marking a definitive return to form in what has become the most storied performance of the IPL 2026 season thus far.

The 23-year-old left-hander’s innings was a study in extreme contrast. Following a string of lacklustre scores—including tallies of 20, 0, 14, 1, and 8—Varma appeared to be labouring again early in his knock, managing a meagre 19 runs off his first 22 deliveries. However, a significant turning point occurred at the conclusion of the 14th over, when Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya delivered a sharp, "animated message" to the struggling batter on the pitch.

Whatever the contents of the exchange, the effect was immediate. Varma ignited in the 15th over against seamer Prasidh Krishna, striking his first boundaries of the day. Over the final 23 balls he faced, Varma amassed 82 runs, eventually concluding with eight boundaries and seven sixes.

The Record Books

Varma’s 45-ball century now stands as the joint-fastest in the history of the five-time champion franchise, matching a record established by Sanath Jayasuriya 18 years ago.

Middle-Order Dominance

Varma’s assault was the centrepiece of an 81-run partnership with Pandya, though the captain’s own 15-run contribution off 16 balls was largely overshadowed. The pair capitalised on a struggling Prasidh Krishna, who conceded 41 runs in his final two overs to finish with figures of 1/54. In total, Mumbai plundered 96 runs in the final six overs to reach 199 for 5.

The late-inning surge rescued a Mumbai top order that had been decimated during the power play by Kagiso Rabada. The South African veteran, often grouped with elite contemporaries like Pat Cummins and Jasprit Bumrah, utilised a "Test-match length" to claim 3 for 33.

Rabada’s Early Strike

Rabada’s victims included Danish Malewar, who was trapped leg-before for 2, and Quinton de Kock, who fell for 13 after top-edging a short delivery. The highlight of Rabada’s spell was the dismissal of India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav. Despite having just struck the bowler for a six and a four, Yadav was beaten by a 152 kmph delivery that jagged back sharply to shatter the stumps.

While Naman Dhir attempted to stabilise the innings with a series of boundaries off Ashok Sharma, it was Varma’s post-strategic-break explosion that transformed a potential sub-par total into a match-winning score. By the time Varma struck the final boundary to reach his milestone, he had secured his maiden IPL century and authored one of the most remarkable turnarounds in the tournament's history.
