London: Sir Alastair Cook has expressed an interest in joining the England men's coaching staff in the future, following suggestions from former teammate Michael Atherton that the team requires a "different kind of voice" to restore performance standards.

The proposal for the former captain to take an assistant coaching role emerged as England struggled through a difficult Ashes campaign in Australia. Speaking on Sky Sports, Atherton argued that while head coach Brendon McCullum excels at boosting player confidence, a more disciplined approach is now required.

“What Brendon McCullum's great strength is, he makes players feel 10 feet tall and feel good about themselves, but I think we all agree here that, you know, standards have slipped a little bit in performance,” Atherton said. He added that the team needs someone to "drive a culture of getting back to the standards" that defined the early era of Ben Stokes’ captaincy.

Atherton admitted that pairing the stoic Cook with the aggressive "Bazball" philosophy of McCullum would be "a complete clash," but argued the shift is necessary following a year of declining results.

Responding to the speculation while commentating for TNT Sports, Cook confirmed he has had "zero contact" from the England and Wales Cricket Board but left the door open for a future role.

"Look, at some stage in my life, would I like to be involved in the England cricket team? I think I would like to try to make a difference," Cook said. "I do not know whether that is the next bit or whatever. At the moment, there are people in jobs and all that kind of stuff... Let’s just see."

Cook remains one of England's most decorated players, retiring in 2018 with 12,472 Test runs and 33 centuries. His technical expertise was especially evident in Australia, where he averaged 48.94 across 20 Tests. His most famous contribution came during the 2010-11 Ashes victory, where he amassed 766 runs at a staggering average of 127.66.

The calls for a coaching shake-up come as England captain Ben Stokes recently acknowledged that "home truths" needed to be delivered to the squad after falling 2-0 behind earlier in the current series.
