Mumbai: Police have implemented extensive security measures for the T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team's road show on Thursday evening in Mumbai, anticipating a large turnout of enthusiastic fans, an official confirmed.
Following their return to the country earlier in the day, the victorious team is set to participate in an open bus procession starting from Nariman Point and concluding at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in south Mumbai. The event is scheduled to take place between 5 pm and 7 pm, as detailed by the official on Wednesday.
Given the expected high attendance, authorities are exercising utmost caution to prevent any potential incidents, particularly along the route spanning from Marine Drive near Nariman Point to the Wankhede Stadium.
The Indian cricket team arrived in New Delhi from Barbados earlier in the day via a specially arranged charter flight, where despite inclement weather and stringent security measures, scores of fans gathered at the airport to welcome their sporting heroes.
Delays in their departure from Barbados were attributed to Hurricane Beryl, prompting a late return home for the team. Upon arrival in New Delhi, the squad was greeted by eager supporters amidst a steady drizzle, with security protocols in place to ensure safe interactions.
According to BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, the team is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 11 am at his residence before heading to Mumbai for the celebratory events planned. Shukla further highlighted that a significant ceremony awaits in Mumbai, including the road show from Nariman Point in an open bus, followed by a formal honoring and felicitation of the players. Notably, the players are set to receive a prize money of Rs 125 crore following their victorious campaign.
India's triumph in the T20 World Cup marked their second such title, ending an 11-year drought for an ICC trophy since their Champions Trophy victory in 2013 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The upcoming celebrations in Mumbai underscore the nation's fervent support for its cricketing champions and the anticipation surrounding their historic achievement in international cricket.
