Kingstown: Afghanistan scripted a historic milestone in cricket by securing their first-ever T20 World Cup semifinal berth with a hard-fought eight-run victory over Bangladesh in a rain-interrupted Super 8 encounter. As a result, the mighty Aussies were knocked out from the tournament.

Led by the indomitable Rashid Khan, Afghanistan's triumph marked a significant achievement in their cricketing journey marred by adversity and challenges, including political turmoil and lack of home facilities.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan struggled to 115/5 in their allotted 19 overs on a challenging pitch that saw Bangladesh bowlers dominate with 66 dot balls. Despite a sluggish start, opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored with 43 off 55 deliveries.

In response, Bangladesh faced a revised target of 114 due to rain interruptions. Afghanistan showcased their resilience and skill with the ball, spearheaded by Rashid Khan's exceptional spell of 4/23 and pacer Naveen-ul-Haq's 4/26. Their combined efforts restricted Bangladesh to 105 all out in 17.5 overs, ensuring a successful defence of their modest total.

Bangladesh's innings saw a lone fighter in Litton Das, who remained unbeaten with 54 runs. However, his efforts were overshadowed by Rashid Khan's wizardry, who not only played a pivotal role in bowling out the opposition but also became the fastest bowler to reach 150 T20 wickets during the match.

The match wasn't without controversy as Afghanistan employed tactical delays to disrupt Bangladesh's momentum, prompting scrutiny from commentators and observers alike. Despite these interruptions, Afghanistan maintained their focus and composure, clinching crucial wickets at regular intervals to seal their historic victory.

Afghanistan's journey in international cricket has been characterised by resilience, with key contributions from their opening batsmen and disciplined bowling attacks. The win over Bangladesh, following their earlier upset against defending champions Australia, underscores Afghanistan's growing stature in the cricketing world despite challenges back home.

The momentous achievement was celebrated with emotional scenes on the field, marking a new chapter in Afghanistan's cricketing narrative. The team's success resonates deeply amidst international scepticism and challenges regarding their participation due to political concerns and logistical issues.

Looking ahead, Afghanistan will face South Africa in the semifinals on June 27, aiming to continue their impressive campaign and potentially advance to the tournament final. Their progress serves as a testament to their perseverance and determination to excel on the global cricketing stage, overcoming formidable odds and earning respect and admiration from the cricketing fraternity worldwide.
