Discussing the role of fraternity in the age of artificial intelligence, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, D Y Chandrachud explained how AI enhances daily life but also raises serious concerns about data privacy, with personal information often being used without consent. He also warned about the misuse of AI for unethical activities.
Explaining how artificial intelligence transforms every aspect of our lives, Chandrachud said: "Healthcare and transportation is in the forefront of this transformation. The rise of generative AI has eased our tasks that require complex outputs. AI has become essential for the society. However, AI comes with two vital concerns. First, personal data on various platforms is often used without active consent. Second, AI can be misused for unethical purposes." Chandrachud said that addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring responsible AI development.
Speaking on the topic "Reimagine India: Fraternity as the Constitutional Soul" Chandrachud said that social media companies like Meta, which has 3.2 lakh billion users, leverage user data to enhance AI systems. However, this practice raises concerns about data security and breaches. Meta has also been accused of allowing disinformation to spread unchecked, sometimes influencing election outcomes. "In the digital age, the only thing that matters is who speaks louder and not who speaks rationally." These challenges must be addressed to maintain integrity in online spaces.
Fraternity requires moral and ethical rules in public discourse on social media, to prevent the spread of hate or polarisation. "Fraternity demands that AI be used ethically," he said.
The former chief justice shared his deep connection to Kerala, highlighting that his wife had spent most of her life in Kasaragod.
