Vadakara: The heavy defeat in Vadakara where the election was contested with unprecedented rage during the campaign has shattered the CPM. The fact that the  constituency, considered as a stronghold of LDF, especially CPM, has been giving continuous set backs in LS elections, has created a situation where the party think tanks should take a serious look into the approach and attitude of the leadership. The collapse of LDF in six out of the seven assembly constituencies belong to Vadakara lok sabha constituency posed some worrying questions before the party.

In Thalassery, where the LDF anticipated a comfortable lead, the margin was just 8,630 votes. This marks a sharp decline from the 2019 elections, where the LDF secured a lead of 11,469 votes. Shafi emerged victorious in Koothuparamba, Vadakara, Kuttiady, Nadapuram, Koyilandy and Perambra constituencies.

The LDF had aimed to secure a substantial majority in Thalassery, Koothuparamba, and Perambra in Kozhikode district, believing that even though the UDF would prevail in Nadapuram, Kuttyadi, Vadakara, and Koyilandy even by narrow margins, the win could be grabbed. However, Thalassery fell significantly short of their anticipated vote count.

In 2014, the LDF had enjoyed a lead of 23,039 votes in Thalassery. In 2021, CPM's A N Shamseer secured victory by a margin of 36,801 votes. However, all of these votes disappeared this time around. In Koothuparamba, the UDF's lead by 10,892 votes came as a setback, considering they had only secured a majority of 4,133 votes in the 2019 elections.

Even the traditionally left-leaning Perambra constituency drifted away from the LDF, with the UDF securing increasing majorities over the years. In 2014, the UDF won by 1,175 votes, and in 2019, their majority soared to 13,204 votes. This time, their lead extended to 19,085 votes, indicating a significant shift away from the Left.
