Munich: Lamine Yamal etched his name in European Championship history as the youngest-ever scorer at the tournament, propelling Spain to a 2-1 semifinal victory over France on Tuesday. Aged just 16 years and 362 days, Yamal delivered a stunning goal from 25 yards, curling the ball into the top left corner past French goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Reflecting on his milestone, Yamal expressed his joy and determination, stating, "I only ask to win, win and win. I will celebrate my birthday in Germany with my team." His goal not only levelled the match after Randal Kolo Muani's early opener for France but also underscored his emergence as a prodigious talent on the international stage.

"I don’t know if it is the best goal of the tournament, but it is the most special goal for me because it is my first goal with the team at a European Championship," Yamal remarked humbly.

Yamal's journey in Euro 2024 has been marked by breaking records. He had already become the youngest player to debut and score in the Spanish league at 15, as well as the youngest to start in the Champions League and score for Spain. His rapid rise continues to captivate fans and experts alike.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Yamal's exceptional ability, urging him to maintain his humility and work ethic. "He will keep improving with the same attitude, professionality, and maturity that he shows during games, despite being so young," de la Fuente emphasised. "Above all, he should enjoy playing for us. Hopefully, we can enjoy him for many years."

Yamal's goal against France not only highlighted his individual brilliance but also spurred Spain to turn the tide in their favour. Four minutes after his equaliser, Dani Olmo's shot found the net after a deflection off France's Jules Koundé, securing Spain's place in the final.

Reflecting on the match, Olmo acknowledged, "They scored first but we planned well for the game and stuck to our plan. Lamine scored a great goal."

As the final whistle blew, Yamal's mind raced back to the last European Championship, when he watched as a spectator with friends in a shopping mall. "This is a dream come true to reach the final with the national team," he shared with emotion.

With Spain set to face either England or the Netherlands in Berlin, Yamal's youthful exuberance and exceptional talent promise to play a crucial role as his team aims for European glory. For him, every moment on the pitch is a step toward fulfilling his footballing dreams. AP
