East Rutherford: Lionel Messi expressed his satisfaction after guiding Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Canada, securing their spot in the Copa America final. The 37-year-old, who scored in the semifinal match, reflected on what he described as his "last battles" with the national team.
Following a subpar performance against Ecuador in the quarterfinals, Messi showcased his brilliance once more, linking up effectively with Angel Di Maria and Julian Alvarez, who also found the net. Speaking to TyC Sports after the win, Messi emphasised his enjoyment of these final competitive matches, reminiscent of previous tournaments like the Copa America and the World Cup.
"Now, these are the last battles, and I'm savouring every moment," Messi remarked, looking ahead to a final clash against either Uruguay or Colombia. The Inter Miami player in Major League Soccer didn't disclose whether he'll participate in the 2026 World Cup, which features a final set at New Jersey's venue.
When asked about Messi's comment regarding his "last battles," Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni urged patience and respect for the veteran's decisions. "He knows that we won't close any doors on him. He can stay with us for as long as he wishes, even after retirement," Scaloni assured.
Messi, who has already secured two major titles with Argentina – the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 Copa America – credited the team's resilience over challenging years. "What this group and the Argentina national team have achieved is incredible," Messi remarked. "It validates everything we've been through, especially during the tough times," he added, reflecting on the team's journey to the final.
Despite Argentina's comfortable path to the final against Canada, Messi acknowledged the tough tests they've faced in the Copa America. "It's been a challenging tournament with difficult pitches, extreme temperatures, and strong opponents," Messi noted. "To reach another final and compete for the championship is something special," he emphasised.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez echoed Messi's sentiments, expressing pride in representing Argentina and reaching yet another final. "It's an honour to play in another final. It feels as thrilling as the first time," Martinez said, reflecting on the team's journey and aspirations for the upcoming final showdown. AFP
