Xi Jinping’s daughter back in spotlight amid US visa crackdown on Chinese students

Xi Mingze, the daughter of Chinese President Xi Jinping, has drawn renewed attention following threats from MAGA activist Laura Loomer, who said she intends to confront Mingze over her alleged US residence.
Loomer claimed Xi Mingze lives in Massachusetts under the protection of guards linked to China’s PLA, sparking controversy amid heightened US-China tensions.
Xi Mingze studied at Harvard University from 2010 to 2014 under a pseudonym, earning a psychology degree. Though she reportedly returned to China after graduation, unverified reports claim she resumed graduate studies at Harvard in 2019. Her current location remains officially unconfirmed, but speculation persists about her presence in the US.
In 2019, a Chinese technician, Niu Tengyu, was sentenced to 14 years for allegedly leaking Xi Mingze’s personal data—an act human rights groups claim was politically motivated. In 2022, US Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler alleged Xi Mingze was residing in the US, though neither the US nor China has confirmed this.
The issue has resurfaced amid a new US visa policy announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, targeting Chinese students with links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or those enrolled in sensitive fields like AI, defence, and robotics. The crackdown includes tougher background checks and stricter criteria for applicants from China and Hong Kong.
China has strongly opposed the move, calling it ideologically driven and harmful to educational exchanges. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China had lodged a formal protest, calling the policy “unjustified” and a violation of students’ rights.
There is no verified information indicating Xi Mingze is facing deportation. However, her reported presence in the US during this visa crackdown has reignited debates around diplomatic privilege, political scrutiny, and US-China relations.
