Charlie Kirk, one of the most recognisable conservative activists in the United States and a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, died on Wednesday after being shot during an event at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah.

Known for founding Turning Point USA and for his confrontational speaking style, Kirk was both a celebrated and polarising figure in American politics.

Early life and education

Born on 14 October 1993 in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Charlie Kirk became active in politics at a young age. He volunteered for Republican campaigns and took part in student activism.

Kirk briefly attended Harper College before deciding to leave, a decision influenced by Tea Party member Bill Montgomery, who encouraged him to pursue political activism full-time.

Turning Point USA

At just 18, Kirk launched Turning Point USA in 2012. The organisation expanded quickly, establishing more than 800 chapters on college campuses across the United States. It became a major platform for mobilising young conservative voters, particularly during Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign.

Media career and ideology

Kirk built a significant media presence alongside his activism. He hosted The Charlie Kirk Show, a daily radio programme, and wrote books including Campus Battlefield (2018) and The MAGA Doctrine (2020).

NBC News reported that his podcast was downloaded between 500,000 and 750,000 times each day.

His ideology aligned closely with Trump’s hard-right Republican movement. He strongly supported the former president’s false claims of election fraud in 2020 and frequently used his platform to criticise migrants and transgender people.

Known for his quick and confrontational debate style, Kirk often engaged students in fast-paced exchanges that went viral online.

Controversies and criticism

Kirk was a regular presence on Fox News and one of the most prominent conservative podcast hosts in America. His commentary often blended conspiracy theories and half-truths, with controversial statements about COVID-19 and immigration, some later echoed by Trump himself.

Critics labelled him a “charismatic Christian nationalist” and accused him of amplifying extremist ideas. Turning Point USA was also criticised for its links to the 6 January 2021 Capitol riot, after some activists connected with the group were taken to Washington, D.C., to oppose the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

Political ties with Trump

Despite the controversies, Kirk remained trusted within Trump’s circle. He worked as a personal assistant to Donald Trump Jr. during the 2016 presidential campaign and travelled with him on political trips, including a visit to Greenland earlier this year.

Personal life

Charlie Kirk married Erika Frantzve in May 2021 in Scottsdale, Arizona, after meeting her in 2019.

She works as a real estate agent with The Corcoran Group in New York City and is the founder of Everyday Heroes Like You, a non-profit focused on community empowerment. She also hosts the inspirational podcast Midweek Rise Up, launched in 2019, and runs PROCLAIM Streetwear, a faith-based clothing brand.

A former beauty queen, Erika was crowned Miss Arizona USA in 2012 and previously played basketball at Regis University in Denver, Colorado.

The couple have two children: a daughter, Sarah Rose, born in 2021, and a son born in 2023.
