Metreweli will be the 18th Chief in MI6 history, replacing Sir Richard Moore later this year

London: In a historic first for British intelligence, Blaise Metreweli CMG has been appointed Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, more commonly known as MI6. She becomes the first woman to lead the UK’s foreign spy agency in its 116-year history.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the appointment on Monday, calling it a "historic" moment and underscoring the critical role intelligence services play in an increasingly complex global security landscape. "The United Kingdom is facing threats on an unprecedented scale – be it aggressors who send their spy ships to our waters or hackers whose sophisticated cyber plots seek to disrupt our public services," he said.
Metreweli will be the 18th Chief in MI6 history, replacing Sir Richard Moore later this year. Often referred to simply as “C,” the head of MI6 is the only publicly named member of the agency and is responsible for its overall operational strategy. The Chief reports directly to the Foreign Secretary. Richard Moore shared his message on X regarding the transfer of power to the new officer.
A career in intelligence
Blaise Metreweli, 47, is a veteran intelligence officer with a career spanning over two decades. She joined MI6 in 1999 as a case officer and has since undertaken a range of critical assignments, particularly in operational roles across the Middle East and Europe. Her extensive field experience has earned her a reputation as a strategic thinker and a skilled leader in complex environments.
In addition to her overseas postings, Metreweli has served in senior leadership roles in both MI6 and MI5, the UK’s domestic security service. Most recently, she has held the position of Director General 'Q', overseeing MI6’s technology and innovation efforts--an increasingly vital area of focus for intelligence operations in the digital age.
Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, she studied Anthropology before embarking on her intelligence career. Her academic background has reportedly shaped her nuanced approach to international security and cross-cultural engagement.
“Proud and honoured”
In a brief statement, Metreweli said she was “proud and honoured” to have been chosen to lead MI6. “MI6 plays a vital role – with MI5 and GCHQ – in keeping the British people safe and promoting UK interests overseas,” she said.
Sir Richard Moore, the outgoing Chief, welcomed the appointment of his successor. “Blaise is a highly accomplished intelligence officer and leader, and one of our foremost thinkers on technology. I am absolutely delighted by this historic appointment and excited to see her lead MI6 into the future.”
A new chapter for MI6
Metreweli’s appointment comes at a time when the UK faces evolving threats from hostile states, cyberattacks, and global terrorism. As the new Chief, she will be at the forefront of efforts to enhance Britain’s intelligence capabilities and safeguard national interests abroad.
Her leadership also marks a significant step forward in gender representation within the highest levels of British intelligence—an area traditionally dominated by men.
With a blend of field expertise, technological insight, and leadership experience, Blaise Metreweli’s historic appointment signals a new era for MI6.
