Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino issued a statement endorsing a Supreme Court ruling that appointed Rodriguez as acting president for 90 days.

Maduro and his wife, seized overnight from their house in a military base, were first taken aboard a US warship on their way to face prosecution for a Justice Department indictment, accusing them of participating in a narco-terrorism conspiracy. Trump has vowed that the United States will "run" Venezuela for a transitional period and tap its vast oil resources.

Maduro and his wife landed late Saturday afternoon at a small airport in New York. The couple face US charges of participating in a narco-terrorism conspiracy.
