Davos: US President Donald Trump addressed world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, stating that Europe is “not heading in the right direction”. Speaking to a global audience, Trump cited unchecked migration, record budget deficits, and trade imbalances as reasons for his concern, while emphasising America’s economic strength.

Focus on US economy

Trump’s speech largely highlighted the American economy, boasting about low unemployment, border security, and economic growth. He stated, “The economy is booming,” adding that Americans are “very happy” with his policies, though polls suggest mixed public sentiment, with 74% believing his administration is not doing enough to control prices.

Greenland and trade tensions

Earlier, Trump had proposed a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries opposing his plan to acquire Greenland. French President Emmanuel Macron warned of possible EU retaliatory measures, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated he would not yield to US pressure on Greenland.

International reaction

Trump described Europe as unrecognisable to him but stated that he loves Europe and wants it to succeed. Analysts noted that his comments at Davos were more measured than typical rally speeches, focusing on economic messaging for both domestic and international audiences.

Following Davos, Trump is expected to return to the US for a series of economy-focused events, beginning in Iowa, with about one event per week emphasising economic performance and policy achievements.
