Davos: US President Donald Trump landed in Davos, Switzerland, today after a minor electrical issue forced Air Force One to turn back mid-journey. Trump switched to a different aircraft and arrived approximately three hours late.

The trip comes amid escalating tensions with European nations over Trump’s proposed US control of Greenland and threats to impose tariffs on eight European countries opposing the plan. EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen stated Europe is “fully prepared” to act, while NATO and European leaders have expressed concerns over security and transatlantic principles.

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves indicated that retaliatory tariffs could not be ruled out, while French President Emmanuel Macron warned of possible EU countermeasures. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasised Europe would not “accept to be blackmailed,” and Belgium’s Prime Minister Bart De Wever criticised Trump for crossing red lines.

Trump, meanwhile, expressed confidence that the Greenland row would not affect the US-Europe trade deal, stating, “I doubt it.” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged European nations to “sit down and wait” for Trump’s explanations during the WEF discussions.

NATO leaders have held meetings to discuss the situation, stressing that diplomacy must remain the priority while ensuring unity among allies. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde called US actions “very strange” for a long-standing ally, and China distanced itself from the issue, warning against dependence on the US.

Trump is scheduled to speak at the World Economic Forum later today, with discussions expected to focus on his Greenland plans, tariffs, and global economic cooperation.
