Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s air defences successfully engaged ballistic missiles over the capital Riyadh on Wednesday, as Iran’s ongoing campaign in the Gulf continued to escalate, the Saudi Defence Ministry confirmed.

AFP journalists in Riyadh reported hearing loud explosions echoing across the city, while residents received emergency alerts warning that “the area is under hostile aerial threat.”

A ministry spokesperson stated on X that air defences were actively countering the ballistic threat, underscoring the kingdom’s readiness against attacks.

Iranian missile and drone campaign

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated Iranian missile and drone strikes, targeting critical infrastructure, including energy installations and the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh. The latest interception highlights the heightened security measures implemented to protect civilians and strategic assets in the Gulf region.

The incident adds to growing concerns over regional security in the Gulf, emphasising the risks to energy exports, diplomatic missions, and international shipping lanes.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents to follow official advisories while the kingdom maintains heightened defence readiness.
