Washington: US President Donald Trump has unveiled plans to sign an executive order that will allow the detention of the "worst criminal" illegal immigrants at Guantanamo Bay, a facility historically used for holding terrorists.

Speaking at a White House event on Wednesday, Trump revealed his intention to direct the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to prepare a 30,000-person migrant detention centre at the Guantanamo Bay facility. The facility, traditionally known for housing suspected terrorists, is now being repurposed to hold illegal immigrants who pose a serious threat to American security.

"I'm also signing an executive order to instruct the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to begin preparing the 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantanamo," Trump said.

'Worst criminal' migrants to be held at Guantanamo

Trump emphasised that the 30,000-bed facility would house illegal immigrants who are considered the "worst criminals" and pose the most significant threats to the US. He added, "We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people."

The President also pointed out that some of these individuals are so dangerous that the US does not trust their home countries to accept them back, stating, "Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to all of them because we don't want them coming back. So we're going to send them out to Guantanamo."

Doubling detention capacity

Trump further mentioned that the move would immediately double the country's capacity to detain such individuals, saying, "This will double our capacity immediately. It's a tough place to get out of today. This brings us one step closer to eradicating the scourge of migrant crime in our communities once and for all."

The announcement comes as Trump continues to ramp up his administration’s efforts to deport illegal immigrants, with a particular focus on those with criminal backgrounds. The new detention plans are part of a broader strategy to tackle illegal immigration and enhance national security.
