Washington: Elon Musk has voiced strong support for US President Donald Trump’s recent executive order to restrict gender transition procedures for minors. The order, signed on Tuesday, bans federal funding for such procedures and aims to halt what Trump calls “chemical castration and medical mutilation” of children.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, expressed his outrage on social media, stating, “Children cannot consent. That is why there are laws protecting minors. Those who perpetrated this evil should be in prison for life.” His remarks echo the strong stance taken by Trump in his executive order, which focuses on stopping gender-affirming care for minors, including hormone treatments and surgeries.

Trump’s executive order
Trump signed the executive order, which also includes provisions to cut off federal financial support for institutions that provide gender-affirming medical procedures to minors. In his tweet, the US president declared: “Today, it was my great honour to sign an Executive Order banning the chemical castration and medical mutilation of innocent children in the United States of America. Our Nation will no longer fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support so-called ‘gender affirming care,’ which has already ruined far too many precious lives.”
Trump’s executive order aims to restrict the practice, which he has described as a “dangerous trend,” and has called for agencies to use all available means to stop federal funding for such treatments. The order affects several federal health programmes, including Medicaid, Medicare, and health insurance under the US Defence Department.
National debate on gender-affirming care for minors
Trump’s move comes amid a growing debate in the US over gender-affirming care for minors. While some Republican-led states have already enacted laws to restrict such treatments, this executive order adds a new layer of federal opposition to gender transitions for those under 19.
Supporters of the ban, like Musk and Trump, argue that children are not capable of consenting to life-altering medical procedures. They also believe the procedures have long-term negative effects on minors, contributing to what they describe as the "ruining" of lives.
However, critics of the executive order have warned that it undermines the rights of transgender youth and their families to make decisions about their health care. They argue that gender-affirming treatments are medically necessary for many minors, leading to improved mental health and well-being.
