Beijing: Super Typhoon Yagi struck southern China's Hainan island, resulting in at least two deaths and injuring 92 people, according to state media reports on Saturday.

The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds to Hainan, with gusts reaching over 230 kilometres (143 miles) per hour, according to state-run news agency Xinhua. These conditions caused extensive damage, including uprooted trees, and led to the evacuation of approximately 460,000 residents.

The typhoon made landfall on Hainan Island, a popular tourist destination, on Friday. The main airport in Haikou was closed until 3 p.m. local time on Saturday (0700 GMT), as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.

In the neighbouring province of Guangdong, authorities had evacuated more than 574,000 people to safety as the storm approached.

Earlier this week, Typhoon Yagi, which was initially a tropical storm, had already claimed at least 13 lives in the Philippines before strengthening into a super typhoon.

After battering southern China, Yagi is expected to move towards Vietnam, where it is projected to impact the northern and north-central regions, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay, later on Saturday.
