Abu Dhabi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic mission to the United Arab Emirates on Friday culminated in a series of landmark accords and multibillion-dollar investment pledges spanning the energy, defence, banking, and infrastructure sectors.

A central outcome of the high-level visit was the signing of a Framework Agreement for a Strategic Defence Partnership, a move intended to bolster bilateral security and strategic ties. In the energy sector, the two nations solidified their cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding Strategic Petroleum Reserves and a separate pact governing the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Maritime cooperation also saw progress with an MoU focused on establishing a Ship Repair Cluster in Vadinar, India.

Economic and Diplomatic Engagement

The visit triggered a significant influx of capital, with $5 billion in investments announced for Indian infrastructure projects, alongside capital infusions for RBL Bank and Samman Capital.

Upon his arrival in the capital, the Prime Minister was greeted with a ceremonial guard of honour before engaging in delegation-level discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Broad International Agenda

The stop in Abu Dhabi marks the first leg of a five-nation tour spanning May 15-20. The itinerary, which includes the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy, is designed to broaden India’s strategic footprint in trade, innovation, green energy, and technology while strengthening ties with both the Gulf and Europe.

  • The Netherlands: From May 15-17, Modi will consult with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and hold audiences with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. These talks are anticipated to prioritise water management, semiconductors, and green hydrogen.
  • Sweden: On May 17-18, the Prime Minister will travel to Stockholm for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The leaders are expected to join European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in addressing the European Round Table for Industry, with a focus on artificial intelligence and resilient supply chains.
  • Norway: The tour continues in Oslo on May 19, where Modi will attend the 3rd India-Nordic Summit. He is scheduled for bilateral discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre alongside the heads of government from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden.
