Washington DC: Peter Navarro, Senior Counsellor for Trade and Manufacturing under US President Donald Trump, lashed out on Saturday (US local time) after being fact-checked over his claims on India’s purchase of Russian oil.

Navarro accused X owner Elon Musk of enabling “propaganda” after a community note corrected his assertions. “Wow. @elonmusk is letting propaganda into people's posts. That crap note below is just that. Crap. India buys Russian oil solely to profiteer. It didn't buy any before Russia invaded Ukraine. Indian govt spin machine moving high tilt. Stop killing Ukrainians. Stop taking American job,” Navarro wrote on X.

His outburst followed earlier remarks where he alleged that India’s tariffs were costing “Americans’ jobs” and accused New Delhi of fuelling Moscow’s war chest. Responding to a Washington Post article, Navarro said, “FACTS: India highest tariffs costs U.S. jobs. India buys Russian oil purely to profit/Revenues feed Russia war machine. Ukrainians/Russians die. U.S. taxpayers shell out more. India can't handle truth/spins @washpo Leftist American fake news.”

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi dismissed Navarro’s charges, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal terming them “inaccurate and misleading statements.” “We have seen the inaccurate and misleading statements made by Navarro, and obviously, we reject them,” Jaiswal said at the weekly briefing on Friday.

Navarro’s remarks came even as President Trump spoke warmly of New Delhi’s ties with Washington. Taking questions at the White House, Trump described India-US relations as a “very special relationship” and added, “nothing to worry about,” while stressing that he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi “would always be friends.”

Prime Minister Modi reciprocated on X, posting: “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”
