New York: A police officer of Bangladeshi origin has been hailed a hero after being killed in a mass shooting in New York City.

Didarul Islam, 36, an officer with the New York Police Department (NYPD), was fatally shot by a gunman with a known mental health history at a Midtown Manhattan office building on Tuesday morning.

Islam, an immigrant who had been serving the NYPD for three and a half years, was reportedly confronting the shooter when he was gunned down. New York Mayor Eric Adams paid tribute to the fallen officer, saying, "He loved this city and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith… He was a true-blue New Yorker not only in the uniform he wore, but in his spirit and energy of loving his city."

Islam is survived by his wife, two young sons, and an unborn third child. According to local reports, his wife is eight months pregnant. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Islam embodied the department's finest values and was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short.

The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, died by suicide after carrying out the attack. Authorities stated he entered the 345 Park Avenue skyscraper with an AR-style rifle and began firing, killing three others—two women and a man—before turning the gun on himself.

Another person was critically injured and is receiving treatment. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

Islam had been posted at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx and joined the NYPD in December 2021. His death has stirred widespread mourning and respect, especially among immigrant communities who see him as a symbol of selfless service and sacrifice.
