North Korea has claimed to have successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The missile launch was reportedly conducted under the direct orders of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who was present at the launch site.
KCNA reported that the missile's flight records exceeded all previous ICBM launches by North Korea, suggesting advancements in the country's missile capabilities.
leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a "very crucial" test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, intended to strengthen the nation's nuclear deterrent.
"The test-fire is an appropriate military action that fully meets the purpose of informing our rivals... of our determination to respond," Kim stated at the launch, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
Kim Jong Un described the launch as "an appropriate military action" intended to demonstrate North Korea's commitment to countering perceived threats from its adversaries, which he said have jeopardized the country's security.
The move comes amid heightened tensions in the region, as North Korea continues to assert its stance against what it views as destabilizing actions from other nations.
Meanwhile, the United States condemned North Korea's recent missile launch, calling it a 'flagrant violation' of UN Security Council resolutions and warning that it threatens regional stability.
"The United States strongly condemns the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) intercontinental ballistic missile test. This launch is a clear breach of multiple UN Security Council resolutions," National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett stated.
