Kathmandu: The Nepali government has announced compensation of 2,00,000 Nepali rupees (about USD 1,497) for each family affected by the recent floods and landslides, which have resulted in 217 deaths. This decision was made following a cabinet meeting and includes families of individuals who have been missing for more than 10 days due to the disaster.
In addition to the compensation, a three-day national mourning period will begin on Tuesday, as the nation remembers those who lost their lives. "The national flag will be lowered to half-mast during the mourning period," said Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung, who is also the government spokesperson, on Monday evening.

The government has also allocated 1 billion rupees (approximately USD 7.48 million) to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, as confirmed by government spokesperson Gurung.
As of Monday evening, 24 people are still missing and 130 others have been reported injured, according to a statement from Nepal Police. Rescue efforts are ongoing, involving cooperation between the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the Nepali Army.
However, these rescue operations have been hindered by damaged infrastructure. Key roads have been blocked by landslides and flooding, making it difficult to transport essential supplies and aid to affected areas.
In a safety advisory issued on Monday, Nepal Police urged residents, particularly those living in high-risk areas, to remain vigilant. They recommended checking with local police stations for updates on road conditions before travelling, as many routes are still dangerous or impassable.
