Another case of mob violence has been reported from Bangladesh, where a 29-year-old Hindu man was beaten to death by a crowd in Rajbari district late on Wednesday night, police officials confirmed.

The victim, identified as Amrit Mandal alias Samrat, was assaulted at around 11 pm at Hosaindanga Old Market in Pangsha Upazila. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead shortly after the attack.

Confirming the incident, Pangsha Model Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Moinul Islam said Mandal was allegedly accused of extortion by residents, following which the situation escalated into mob violence.

Police records describe Amrit Mandal as a local group leader, popularly known as “Samrat Bahini.” He was the son of Akshay Mandal, a resident of Hosaindanga village.

Second lynching in a week

The killing comes just days after another mob lynching that sparked widespread outrage across Bangladesh. On December 18, factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, after being accused of making derogatory remarks about Islam during a factory event. After his death, the mob allegedly tied his body to a tree and set it on fire.

Unrest in Bangladesh

The Rajbari killing occurred just hours before violent protests erupted in Dhaka following the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent student leader. In the aftermath of Hadi’s death, some youth leaders were reported to have made provocative anti-India statements.

In recent weeks, Bangladeshi security forces have repeatedly intervened to stop protesters from marching towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Last week, a mob also pelted stones at the Indian Assistant High Commission building in Chittagong, further escalating tensions amid the ongoing unrest.
