Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has announced a significant offshore discovery, identifying a new natural gas field projected to contain around one trillion cubic feet of gas.

In a statement released on Monday, the company described the find as a “major exploration achievement” in Kuwait’s offshore region, naming the newly discovered site as the Jazah offshore field.

The field spans roughly 40 square kilometres (15 square miles), with early tests showing production levels exceeding 29 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Kuwait, a leading oil producer, has been seeking to expand its natural gas output to enhance energy self-sufficiency and support its long-term economic diversification goals.

Minister of Oil and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) Chairman Tariq Suleiman Al-Roumi hailed the discovery as “a strategic step” that aligns with the country’s national energy ambitions.

“Efforts are currently underway to accelerate the development of the offshore fields discovered and integrate them into the production system,” Al-Roumi said, adding that the project would contribute to economic growth and generate new employment opportunities for Kuwaiti professionals.

The discovery marks one of Kuwait’s most promising gas finds in recent years, reinforcing the Gulf state’s strategy to boost domestic gas output amid fluctuating global energy markets.

The Kuwait Oil Company, a subsidiary of the state-run Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), announced that the Jazah offshore natural gas field spans 40 square kilometres and could yield about one trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas. The company’s preliminary production tests indicate that the site is capable of producing over 29 million cubic feet of gas daily.

Oil Minister Tariq Suleiman Al-Roumi said the find strengthens Kuwait’s position in the regional energy market and complements its long-term vision to diversify energy resources. The ministry plans to accelerate exploration and development to bring the field into active production as soon as possible.

The announcement reflects Kuwait’s broader efforts to develop non-oil energy sources, improve energy security, and meet domestic demand for cleaner fuel.
