London: Buckingham Palace confirmed on Tuesday that King Charles III will proceed with a high-stakes state visit to the United States next month, despite mounting political pressure to cancel the trip amid a diplomatic rift over the war in Iran.

The King and Queen Camilla are scheduled to travel in late April to participate in the 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence. President Donald Trump, writing on his Truth Social platform, specified the dates as April 27–30.

“I look forward to spending time with the King, whom I greatly respect,” Trump posted. “It will be TERRIFIC!”

The announcement follows a period of heightened tension between Washington and London. The president has repeatedly criticised the British government for its refusal to permit U.S. aircraft to utilise British bases for offensive sorties against Iran. In a recent social media broadside, Trump urged nations facing fuel shortages due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to “build up some delayed courage, go the Strait and just TAKE IT.”

Political Backlash in Westminster

The decision to go ahead with the visit has drawn sharp condemnation from opposition lawmakers. Critics argue that Prime Minister Keir Starmer is exposing the monarch to potential embarrassment following Trump’s frequent insults directed at British leadership, including a claim that Starmer is “not Winston Churchill.”

Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, accused the prime minister of a “staggering lack of backbone.”

“To send the king on a state visit to the U.S. after Trump dismissed our Royal Navy as toys is a humiliation and a sign of a government too weak to stand up to bullies,” Davey said Tuesday. “What appalling thing does Trump have to do next to make the government see sense and cancel the state visit?”

Diplomatic Strategy

State visits are conducted by the monarch at the formal request of the elected government to bolster international ties. Analysts suggest that Starmer is utilising the "special relationship" and the president’s known affinity for the Royal Family to de-escalate wartime frictions.

The groundwork for this diplomatic exchange was laid in February 2025, when Starmer travelled to Washington just weeks after Trump’s second inauguration to hand-deliver a personal invitation from the King. It marked the first time a world leader had been honoured with a second state visit, an invitation Trump previously described as “a great, great honour.”

A Historic Itinerary

While Charles has visited the United States 19 times in various capacities, this will mark his inaugural state visit as sovereign. His predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II, undertook four such ceremonial visits during her reign.

The Royal couple’s itinerary will also include a stop in Bermuda, marking the King's first visit to the British Overseas Territory since his accession to the throne.
