PM Modi will be the Guest of Honour at the 60th Independence Day celebrations

Male: Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has lauded India for its crucial role in helping his country avert an economic collapse during its recent financial crisis. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to attend the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations, Nasheed said that without India's timely assistance, the island nation "would have gone default" on its debt.
Nasheed spoke to ANI and emphasised that India's financial and economic partnership is built on trust and regional solidarity, playing a critical role in maintaining the Maldives' economic stability amid mounting financial difficulties and debt repayment obligations.
Regarding the Maldives' foreign policy, Nasheed asserted that the country has always maintained an "India-first" approach. He acknowledged past instances where election cycles caused foreign policy to swing between pro-China and pro-India stances, but stated that current Maldivian democracy ensures a more stable and consistent "firmly India-first" approach across the political spectrum.
Nasheed highlighted the strategic importance of the Maldives' location in the Indian Ocean, stressing that PM Modi's visit reaffirms India's interest in the long-standing relationship, which contributes to the Maldives' stability and shared prosperity. On defence, he underscored the essential and robust cooperation between the two nations for enhancing safety, security, and stability in the Indian Ocean region, citing shared responsibilities in guarding maritime routes, improving disaster response, and protecting the marine environment.
Praising India's rapid economic growth, Nasheed articulated that India's ascent is not isolated but based on shared development, aligning with its "Neighbourhood First" policy. He pointed to tangible outcomes like the rapid increase in Indian tourist arrivals to Maldivian high-end resorts, reflecting strong bilateral ties.
Looking forward, Nasheed called for a structured trade agreement between India and the Maldives, particularly to formalise the high demand for Maldivian fish in Indian markets. He believes such an agreement would provide predictability, bolster food security, diversify market access, and deepen trust, fostering broader economic integration in shipping, logistics, and sustainable marine practices. He also anticipates PM Modi's visit will further boost Indian tourism, noting that the Indian-backed Hanimadhoo Airport project, nearing completion, will significantly enhance connectivity between southern Indian cities and northern Maldives.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Maldives from July 25-26, where he will be the Guest of Honour at the 60th Independence Day celebrations and hold talks with President Mohamed Muizzu to strengthen bilateral ties and review the 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,' aiming to reset previously strained relations.
