At least 639 people have been killed and over 1,300 wounded in Israeli airstrikes across Iran, according to a US-based human rights group

Dubai: Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory have killed at least 639 people and injured 1,329, according to a new tally from the Washington-based Human Rights Activists (HRA), a group known for documenting abuses inside Iran.
The HRA said it identified 263 civilians and 154 security personnel among the dead. The figures are significantly higher than Iranâs own official estimates. Tehranâs last update, released on Monday, cited 224 fatalities and 1,277 injuriesâa number critics say deliberately downplays the toll.
The group, which gained international credibility during the 2022 protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, cross-referenced its data using on-ground sources and independent local reports.
As Iran grapples with the aftermath of six days of aerial bombardment, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday issued a stern warning to the United States. âAny US military involvement will cause irreparable damage to them,â Khamenei said, responding to President Trumpâs demand for Iran to âsurrender unconditionally.â
Trump, who initially distanced himself from Israelâs offensive against Iranâs nuclear programme, has recently hardened his stance. Speaking on Truth Social, he warned Khamenei that the US knows his location but has âno plans to kill himâfor now.â
Despite rejecting American calls, Khameneiâs second public appearance since the strikes began suggested Tehran is preparing for a prolonged conflict or negotiation. Meanwhile, signs emerged that Israel may ease domestic restrictions, with missile threats reportedly decreasing.
As fears grow of a broader war, senior European diplomats from France, Germany, the UK, and the EU are scheduled to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva on Friday, according to a European official. While the US is not officially part of the discussions, American involvement has not been ruled out.
The UN Security Council will also convene for a second emergency session on Friday, following a joint request by Russia, China, and Pakistan. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a separate statement, offered to mediate, suggesting that Moscow could help Tehran continue a peaceful atomic programme while assuaging Israeli fears.
âI believe a solution can be found,â Putin said during a media briefing.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video message, thanked Trump for his âunwavering supportâ and US military assistance in protecting Israeli airspace.

Iran's Official Figures: Iran's last update on Monday cited only 224 deaths, significantly lower than the rights group's estimate.
Khameneiâs Warning: Iran's Supreme Leader warns of âirreparable damageâ if the US escalates involvement.
Trumpâs Stance: President Donald Trump demands Iranâs âunconditional surrenderâ but denies plans to assassinate Khamenei.
