Dubai: Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory have killed at least 639 people and injured 1,329, according to a new tally from the Washington-based Human Rights Activists (HRA), a group known for documenting abuses inside Iran.

The HRA said it identified 263 civilians and 154 security personnel among the dead. The figures are significantly higher than Iran’s own official estimates. Tehran’s last update, released on Monday, cited 224 fatalities and 1,277 injuries—a number critics say deliberately downplays the toll.

The group, which gained international credibility during the 2022 protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, cross-referenced its data using on-ground sources and independent local reports.

As Iran grapples with the aftermath of six days of aerial bombardment, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday issued a stern warning to the United States. “Any US military involvement will cause irreparable damage to them,” Khamenei said, responding to President Trump’s demand for Iran to “surrender unconditionally.”

Trump, who initially distanced himself from Israel’s offensive against Iran’s nuclear programme, has recently hardened his stance. Speaking on Truth Social, he warned Khamenei that the US knows his location but has “no plans to kill him—for now.”

Despite rejecting American calls, Khamenei’s second public appearance since the strikes began suggested Tehran is preparing for a prolonged conflict or negotiation. Meanwhile, signs emerged that Israel may ease domestic restrictions, with missile threats reportedly decreasing.

As fears grow of a broader war, senior European diplomats from France, Germany, the UK, and the EU are scheduled to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva on Friday, according to a European official. While the US is not officially part of the discussions, American involvement has not been ruled out.

The UN Security Council will also convene for a second emergency session on Friday, following a joint request by Russia, China, and Pakistan. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a separate statement, offered to mediate, suggesting that Moscow could help Tehran continue a peaceful atomic programme while assuaging Israeli fears.

“I believe a solution can be found,” Putin said during a media briefing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video message, thanked Trump for his “unwavering support” and US military assistance in protecting Israeli airspace.
